Example:
Ford Mondeo
Program
code = the internal
name the manufacturer gives to the project, i.e. CDW27 (the W, standing for
World, has been dropped)
Nameplate
= Mondeo
Platform = CD1 (this is Ford’s internal code for their new product development
realisation of platforms and it covers all carlines).
The
latest Mondeo, launched late 2000, is the CD132[1].
It is based on what is now called the CD1 platform, which started life with
the CDW27 and was launched in 1990. The facelifted version, CD162, was
launched in 1996. The project or program code of 162 was sequentially higher
than the one it replaced. Work on program 162, the 1996-facelift, was
started later than the reskinned Mondeo project (132) and hence had a higher
sequential code.
Please
note that in all these cases the platform stayed the same, but the outer
body has been changed. The most major change that can occur to a model is a
new platform complete with a new skin (outside body). Without changing the platform
the most major change to a platform is a re-skin – where the
whole outer sheet changes and perhaps some minor changes are made to the
floorpan and engine compartment. A less drastic change to the same platform
is a major facelift (but this is still a major change); for
example the change from the Toyota Carina to the Avensis where the front and
rear changed substantially. All these changes will be clearly shown in
Miru’s databases both by indicating them in a separate column and then by
production crossover lines showing the production of the old and new model
through the years or months.
Minor
facelifts are
small changes that consist of some metal changes to either the front or
rear, or possibly even more minor with some grill, trim, and ornamental
changes (GTO). The GTO changes won’t be indicated apart from a note in the
model line. Some more significant minor facelifts will be shown separately.
We
trust that these improvements will be to your satisfaction. Please feel free
to contact us should there be anything that is not perfectly clear to you.

In the same way, each manufacturer has its own system.
The current Mercedes C class (W203) superseded the old C Class (W202).
In other words, the number was incremented by one and the next
generation C Class will be coded W204.
